LTL Freight Class Density Breakpoints Table
In LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) shipping, transport rates are governed by freight classes defined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). The primary driver of these classes is shipment density, measured in Pounds per Cubic Foot (PCF). Dense shipments occupy less relative truck space, resolving to cheaper classes, whereas bulky, light items occupy high space and resolve to expensive classes. Use this crosswalk to audit your shipment density against standard NMFC classes.
Freight Class Mappings & Breakpoints
| Minimum Density (PCF) | Maximum Density (PCF) | NMFC Freight Class | Standard Cargo Type Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 30 | - | 50 | Steel bolts, cast iron parts, aggregates, bricks |
| 22.5 | 30 | 55 | Hardwood lumber, structural rebar packages, cement sacks |
| 15 | 22.5 | 60 | Ceramic tiles, packaged auto parts, machinery plates |
| 13.5 | 15 | 65 | Drywall boards, packaged clay brick sets, boxed tiles |
| 12 | 13.5 | 70 | Automotive engines, dense food crates, boxed papers |
| 10.5 | 12 | 77.5 | Paints, joint compound containers, roofing shingles |
| 9 | 10.5 | 85 | Liquids in drums, wood doors, framing lumber bundles |
| 8 | 9 | 92.5 | Heavy electronics, packaged tools, wire spools |
| 7 | 8 | 100 | Standard boxed consumer goods, machinery boxes |
| 6 | 7 | 110 | Cabinets, packed plastic fittings, upholstery fabrics |
| 5 | 6 | 125 | Light wood crates, display stands, carpet rolls |
| 4 | 5 | 150 | Flat-pack furniture, structural plastic tubes |
| 3 | 4 | 175 | Upholstered chairs, boxed bicycles, hollow tubes |
| 2 | 3 | 200 | Light plastic models, boxed lights, cushions |
| 1 | 2 | 250 | Styrofoam cups, bamboo structures, feather pillows |
| Under 1 | - | 500 | Ping-pong balls, empty plastic jars, uncompacted flakes |
How Density Audits Work
Carriers use volumetric dimensional scanners to measure the length, width, and height of pallets as they arrive at terminals. If your calculated density differs from the declaration, the carrier automatically adjusts the class and invoices standard re-classification fees.
Note that some commodities are governed by strict **NMFC Item Codes** that override density classes due to high value, hazard ratings, or custom handling requirements.
